How do you describe shabby chic decorating? The dictionary gives the definition of shabby as, “worn out, frayed, or threadbare after long use". The definition of chic is, “sheek, stylish and elegant". Thus, shabby chic decorating is a style of decorating that uses a mix of stylish and beautiful objects with those that are worn out and frayed.
1) Start by taking a look around your attic or basement for abandoned or unused furniture or home décor. Also, check with friends and relatives—they might love to get rid of discarded items. Flea markets, yard sales and secondhand stores are also great places to browse. This takes time but is well worth it since shabby chic decorating is known as a decorating budget dream!
2) Select a few choice items that can be used with furniture and home décor you already own. Be creative using white paint or whitewash on furniture. Distressed surfaces are also a distinctive element of shabby chic decorating. Add character to furniture by lightly sanding the corners of wooden furniture to give it a worn look.
3) Most shabby chic decorating is based on either a white, cream, or muted grey background. Faded green and pale pink are popular colors used in a variety of fabrics including flower-patterned, checks, and stripes with at least one color repeating in every pattern.
4) The use of home décor and accessories is endless in shabby chic decorating. Even if items are flawed, damaged or blemished, they have a place in the shabby chic room. The item just has to look old! Don’t throw away that chipped teapot your grandmother gave you—there’s a place for it. Gather together your favorite pictures and put them in frames that have an old, worn look.
5) Flowers, candles and pillows are a necessity in a simply shabby chic room. Displaying books on flowers and gardening also add a nice touch.
